Summer Sloth? 3 Tips to Pray!
With the summer season comes swimming, sun, and BBQ. But while summer can bring some much-needed time to slow down our lives and rest, it can also be tempting to take a break from prayer or attending Mass itself. This temptation to "vacation" from Church can lead us to sloth.
? Thomas Aquinas defined it as "sorrow in the face of spiritual growth." It's the"noonday devil," the lack of energy and enthusiasm for spiritual growth. It's the shoulder shrug and the response of "Meh." "I can't be bothered to pray or go to Mass." If we're not careful, we can drift into this state by not keeping our spiritual muscle at the ready.
How can we fit sloth this summer? Consider these 3 quick tips:
Turn off your phone.
Embrace a period of purposeful silence. Start with 10 or 15 minutes and then build up. Go for a walk, read Scripture, or pray the rosary!
Go to a Daily Mass
. Did you know that Mass is offered every day and not just on Sundays? If your schedule allows for it, find a local church and go to Mass one day during the week. You'll be surprised by how much you enjoy it and are spiritually fed by this!
We are called to put our faith into action. Find a Catholic Charities in need of supplies. Bring the Eucharist to someone homebound. Serve the homeless. Christ needs us to be his hands and feet in the world!
